Discover The St Margaret's Bay Trail

St Margaret's Bay TrailThe St. Margaret's Bay Area Rails to Trail Association is a volunteer organization that has built on one of Nova Scotia's most scenic trails...hike, walk, jog, bicycle, horseback ride or cross country ski the St. Margaret's Bay Trail. The trail follows the route of the original railway line that served the Bay's communities, as well as its waterfront hotels that served as resorts for Haligonians in the late 19th and 20th centuries. Lumbering and sawmills were common, of which there is still visible evidence today. Ingramport Bay was a major base for tall ships that carried timber to distant countries.

Located just 30 minutes from downtown Halifax, this 33 Kilometre, multi-use trail winds its way from near the Hubley exit on Hwy 103 (exit 4) to Hubbards (exit 6).

The trail connects to the BLT trail in Hubley and the Aspotogan Trail in Hubbards which then connects to trails on down the Bluenose Coast to Lunenburg. With a little organization and planning this trail system would make a great walking or cycling holiday.

There are several spots where you can access the trail but the major access is at The Train Station Bike and Bean in Upper Tantallon.

The Train Station Bike and Bean

Train Station Bike and Bean

The Train Station Bike & Bean in Tantallon is a café and bike shop located in the historic French Village Train Station, circa 1901.
We know you'll like it here. The Bike & Bean is perfectly situated along the Rails-to-Trails paths running between Halifax and the South Shore.
We serve gourmet coffee, in the Italian style; lattes, cappuccino, espresso, as well as a wide selection of teas and cold drinks accompanied by delicious panini, soups, and sweets. We are fully licensed and we are open year round. We're confident that you will love it here.
Cyclists who love circling the Peggy's Cove or Aspotogan loops can meet at the Bean before, or after their ride. It will also be just the thing for locals or visitors who want nothing more than to curl up with a good book and a latté in comfortable, historic surroundings.
The Bike & Bean will also appeal to ATVers and hikers or anyone who loves the Great Outdoors.
We rent bikes and sell cycling equipment and clothing from the best companies; Sugoi, SmartWool, etc. Families hoping to enjoy a safe, secure bike ride will be able to rent tag-alongs so they can explore one of the province's loveliest regions on the trail with no worries.
The company was founded by Marilou Levangie, who had more than 20 years as a restaurateur in Nova Scotia's best dining rooms. Marilou brought a love of life's finer things to the Bike & Bean, and the business prospered, becoming a Tantallon landmark.
Sadly, Marilou was taken from us in 2012, and we honor her memory by trying to do our best for you.
We have a keen attention to detail. The Bike & Bean is now run by Marilou's business partner Dana Gallant, and manager Heidi Chance, with the same dedication and commitment that has garnered a customer retention rate for his bike touring company — Pedal and Sea Adventures — that is three-times the industry average.
